I'm amending my previous review to include the actual book as well as the Kindle edition. The "quick reference" in the title is a clue - this is an overview of how to apply alcohol ink to a few surfaces but it is not in-depth or complete. It is evidently intended to serve as a companion text to the DVDs which are available on the author's website The price, even as discounted on Amazon, is steep for the superficial coverage. While the Kindle price is reasonable (I purchased both the book and Kindle edition); the paperback price is ridiculous for a 6"x9" paperback. The pages are printed on cheap paper, not glossy, and the quality is worse than my Canon inkjet printer can put out. As artists experiment with this medium, I'm looking forward to more technique books but I will not purchase more from this author. Her work is beautiful but her pieces are similar except for color. Squirting a gold blob onto a piece of Yupo and calling it a sun is not art. Buy the Kindle edition and read it on your phone, your iPad, your Kindle, or your PC but don't waste your money on a paper copy.Product details

Alcohol Ink Dreamscaping Quick Reference Guide edition by June Rollins Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
Good reference for using each of the major brands of Alcohol Inks, and intermixing them. Best using the actual book for practicing the exercises.
This book is a great launching pad to begin a journey into the world of alcohol ink. Rollins shares with us the basics; such as working surfaces, various brands of ink and how they differ, and techniques with easy to find tools. Her beautiful Dreamscapes are a continuous sours of inspiration. If you want to begin working with alcohol inks this book will lead the way.
Inspiring and fabulous book for learning to work with this medium. I work in watercolor and saw these demonstrated in a mini workshop. The results you can get with them are luscious. I'm looking forward to working with them. Instructions are clear and book is well illustrated.
A very interesting book for a creative person.. And now that I have the app to have my books transferred to my I-pad and I can see the illustrations in color it is so much better. I can't wait to get creating!
What a fabulous book! It has everything necessary for a beginner to jump into the medium and succeed. Ms Rollins has presented it all in a clear, well laid out format, and addressed many issues that might stymie the first time user. The result is a benchmark "ai bible" of techniques, allowing artists to move beyond the polished stone technique so many of us might have been trapped in. Another word of thanks is due for her setting up the Facebook group where artists can "meet" to expand their art, and share with others.
There are perhaps a few good things about this book. It details the three most popular alcohol ink brands and speaks to the different qualities of each. The book also details various ways of laying down the inks and how to move them on the paper, either by moving the paper or using various tools. The author seeks to make the art of using AI available to all even if they have had little or no artistic background which I believe is a great thing. However, it falls far short in other ways. First, the images are extremely similar throughout the book. The majority of them are accompanied with the colors and brands of inks used while having little or no instructional value. The few images that come with instructions are not completely clear and have illustrations that don't really help with understanding the steps required to make the image. Perhaps watching her videos might help with the process but that would be an additional purchase. Nearly all of the art in this book are overly saturated with color, something I understand is subjective; while I love color, I also like understated images, too, something you will not find in this book. And, of course, there is the ubiquitous sun/moon that has to be added to each painting. The instructions for making the sun/moon are vastly better than any of the other instructions and I have to say that I am now well versed in that process. (Drop the ink drop here or there, using the law of thirds, and be sure to use this ink and not that one. If you make a mistake here is what you do.). Perhaps worst of all is the fact that there are only 148 pages in the book for what amounts to an extraordinary price. I do not mind spending money but when the book clearly does not contain material that justifies the price and is cheaply presented I feel cheated. I have to admit I do not understand the glowing reviews given to this book. Consider instead Cathy Taylor's Pigments of Your Imagination Pigments of Your Imagination Creating with Alcohol Inks. At nearly $10 less, this is a beautifully presented book illustrating vastly more techniques. It is hard cover and spiral bound and well worth the cost.
I am sure there are some who will love this book; just look at the reviews. I believe the author is very passionate about AI and wants to share her passion with others. There are things to be gleaned. However, not at the price charged for this book and only if you really, really love her work.
I just received June Rollins' beautiful and absolutely essential teaching reference guide on Alcohol Inks. She expertly explains the inks and each step of the process so that even a novice, following June's techniques, can feel like a real artist. I love the explanation of alcohol inks and the various types of inks used in her tutorials. The detail in which June step-by-step demonstrates painting on tile, the tools she uses, and the tiled boxes she creates is just amazing. .This is a must have for anyone interested in knowing more about the process. This book is written by someone who truly wants to teach others about the beauty of alcohol inks.
